FAQ: Private Tutoring

Q: I don’t have a flexible schedule. Would tutoring help?

A: Victory Step recommends private tutoring for students with a more rigorous schedule. For students who can't commit to a specific weekly class, we have tutoring packages that are developed around a student's schedule and customized to fit his/her personality and needs. Victory Step profiles the student to find the best instructor who would work with the student.

Q: Where is private tutoring held?

A: For student's convenience, private tutoring is held at student's home residence (as long as a parent is present). An alternative option would be at a local library.

Q: What happens if we don’t use all the hours?

A: Depending on how many hours remain, you may put them towards a classroom program, or simply use them at a later time, as they do not expire.

Q: How will I know that my child is really making progress?

A: The positive changes in your child at home and in school will be obvious. Additionally, we will give quizzes and practice tests periodically to see how much he or she has advanced in each area of need. Victory Step’s staff will share weekly reports with you and hold meetings to discuss how your child is advancing through his or her individualized program.

Q: Does a tutoring student get access to live proctor tests?

A: Of course! Victory Step’s tutoring students receive all of Victory Step’s materials - curriculum, vocab list, and ten practice tests. Students can search for a proctored location nearby on our website. If there are no locations in the area, or if a student has conflicts on Saturday mornings, he or she have the option to take the test at home. Students are provided with self-proctoring instructions to take the test at home.

Q: Are course materials provided?

A: Yes, all course materials are included in course fee. There are no additional materials to purchase and you will be provided with everything you need to effectively prepare for the SAT or ACT Exam. You will receive everything on the first day of exam or lecture. Our materials include:
- An official study guide with practice tests
- 6 Official Full-Length Practice Tests
- Homework Problems for each lesson
- A comprehensive curriculum book
- Detailed and Analytical score reports for each test.

Q: How many sessions will I need?

A: The average Victory Step student preps with us for 3-5 months of weekly sessions. If your goals are higher, or if you are more challenged by the testing process, timing may vary. We also offer a free consultation that includes a diagnostic quiz to help you assess which plan works best. The precise length depends on several factors:
- The student’s goals
- Student’s tutoring needs, as demonstrated by the diagnostic test, on periodic practice tests, etc.
- The number of times the student requires a tutor each week
- When the student plans to take the official test

Q: Will the tutor assigned be a good fit?

A: Our head instructors work with you to get a clear idea of your child’s personality and what type of tutor would work best for him or her. The head instructor then passes the information to our regional director, who selects a highly compatible tutor in your area. And if you think the match isn’t a good one, we will replace the tutor and repeat the session for no charge. We guarantee that you will love your tutor!

Q: Will we have the same tutor for each session?

A: Always! Victory Step believes that it is imperative to keep one tutor throughout the process so the student and tutor can create a bond. This helps gain insight into a student's learning style.

Q: What if I need to cancel a session?

A: If you need to cancel a session, we ask that you do so at least 24 hours in advance.

Q: How much homework can I expect?

A: Depending on your goal, you should expect 1 to 5 hours of homework a week. Test prep is a serious long-term endeavor.

Q: Do you offer a guarantee?

A: Yes and No. We offer a score improvement guarantee. Your child will increase his score from his past PSAT or SAT/ACT Exam. However, we do not offer specific guarantees. Learning is a complex process, and standardized tests are designed to be challenging for even the strongest students. Many factors affect the outcome of a program: the length of the program, the number of meetings and tests, the student’s starting point, hours of studying, and others. We control these variables as much as possible while addressing concerns throughout the process. We also use previously administered official SAT/ACT tests to monitor scores, so that we can gauge progress and predict test performance on the real test day. Our teachers and tutors have a professional, personal, and ethical commitment to making sure that our students perform their level best on test day!

Q: Do you cover the SAT/ACT essay?

A: Yes. We teach essay building and how to write specifically towards the test to help students achieve their maximum essay score. Students will be working on essays at home and in class, with their instructor and peers.

A: Since Victory Step is an awesome tutoring company, all you would need to bring is a pencil, calculator, and lots of dedication! We will get you results; we just need you to be ready!

Q: Are the practice tests we take full-length official tests?

A:Yes, all practice tests are official full-length SAT exams. They are exactly like the SAT you will be taking on the final day. They are designed to simulate the actual test-taking experience.

Q: What if I can’t make it to one of the classroom lectures?

A: Victory Step offers consecutive classroom programs on a different day or location. Please call us if you would like to make up a missed classroom lecture.

Q:What is the average score improvement for your classes? Do you cover the SAT essay?

Q: What is Victory Step’s hybrid program?

A: Victory Step’s hybrid program combines our classroom program with 4 hours of effective in-home one-on-one tutoring. Normally, 4 hours of tutoring cost $360. With the classroom, it would only cost $199 only! On average, a student can raise his/her score by 50 additional points (1 point on ACT) on top of the classroom average score improvement.

Q: Is my instructor available outside of class?

A: Our instructors are mentors who care about you as a student. They are passionate about teaching. On the very first day, your instructor will provide you with his or her email and phone number. They are excited when you reach out to them to ask questions. So, to answer the question, they will be available before or after class. You can always call or email them to ask SAT, ACT, college related questions, etc.

Q: Would the SAT course help me prepare for the PSAT?

A: Our SAT course covers all of the question types and provides students test take strategies and psychology. The SAT has the exact same type of questions as the PSAT, but the SAT is more evil and longer in length. Both tests are from the same test maker, The College Board. Our SAT course is a solid preparation for those seeking to apply for a National Merit Scholarship.

Q: Do I need to be serious for your SAT/ACT classes?

A:Some students come to class on their own free-will, while others do because their parents have asked them to attend. The SAT is the single most important test you will take in high school. Your score on this test can determine many life outcomes, and you might not be fully aware of all of the ramifications of your test score. Our SAT class is for serious students who want to improve. Our classes are fun yet challenging. It’s simple: take your preparation seriously, exhibit a positive attitude in class, participate fully, complete all of your homework assignments and work hard — you will be successful! Our instructors are easy-going and do their best to make the SAT class entertaining and interesting. Please come to class prepared to learn.

Q: What is the typical classroom size?

A: Average class size is 8- 10 students. Isn’t that awesome?! We want our students to get the attention they deserve.

Q: How soon should I register for one of the classes?
