ABOUT THE ISEE
What is the ISEE?
The ISEE — or Independent School Entrance Exam — is the standardized admissions test used by many of the nation’s top private and independent schools. A strong ISEE score is one of the most important factors in a competitive application.
The exam measures five core areas:
Verbal Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning
Reading Comprehension
Mathematics Achievement
Essay (unscored)
The ISEE has four levels — find the right one for your child:
Level 1
Primary Level
Currently in Grades 2–4
Foundational reading and math. Designed for younger students preparing to enter elementary or early lower-school grades.
Applying for Grades 3–5
Level 2
Lower Level
Currently in Grades 5–6
Builds on core verbal and quantitative foundations. Most common level for students applying to middle school programs.
Applying for Grades 6–7
Level 3
Middle Level
Currently in Grades 7–8
Increased complexity across all tested sections. The level most students take when applying to top private high schools.
Applying for Grades 8–9
Level 4
Upper Level
Currently in Grades 8–11
The most rigorous level. Required by most elite high schools and used for upper-school admissions decisions.
